How does Perplexity choose which sources to cite?

Perplexity selects sources by four criteria: relevance to the specific query, domain authority in Bing and its own index, content freshness (publication and modification dates are an explicit signal), and the ability to extract a short, self-contained answer it can cite. Unlike Google, Perplexity always shows the source with a link — meaning an appearance brings both visibility and a click. The baseline requirement is being indexed by Bing: register your site in Bing Webmaster Tools if you have not, because most Serbian sites skip this step.

How does PerplexityBot work and should you allow it?

PerplexityBot is the crawler that reads sites for the index; there is also a Perplexity-User agent that fetches a page at the moment a user asks a question. You can block them in robots.txt — do not, unless you have an explicit reason. Blocking AI crawlers means complete exclusion from AI search, which in 2026 is the equivalent of blocking Googlebot in 2010. Check your robots.txt: if it contains rules generically blocking unknown bots, you may be unknowingly excluding AI traffic sources too.

What content format does Perplexity cite most?

The format Perplexity cites most often: a two-to-four-sentence paragraph that directly answers the question, placed immediately below a heading phrased as a question. Concrete numbers and ranges (prices, timelines, percentages) have a considerably higher chance of being cited than general claims, because they are useful and verifiable. Also performing well: step lists, tabular comparisons, and FAQ sections. What is almost never cited: marketing copy without data, and pages that bury the answer behind a long introduction.

Why do site speed and content freshness matter?

Speed and freshness: Perplexity-User fetches a page in real time while the user waits for an answer — a slow site can be skipped. The target is LCP under 2.5s on mobile and clean HTML that does not require JavaScript execution to reveal content (server-side rendering or static generation are a clear advantage here). Freshness: explicit publication and modification dates in `BlogPosting` schema markup and visible on the page. Content with a year in the title ("prices in 2026") has a measurably higher citation rate for queries where currency matters.

How do you measure whether Perplexity sends traffic?

Measurement: in Google Analytics 4, filter traffic by source `perplexity.ai` — Perplexity sends a referrer, so it appears as a referral. Create a dedicated segment and track it monthly; add `chat.openai.com`, `chatgpt.com`, `copilot.microsoft.com` and `gemini.google.com` as well. A second indicator is growth in branded queries in Search Console — a user who heard about you from an AI assistant often types the company name into Google afterwards. A third, simplest one: once a month, ask Perplexity your five target queries and record whether you are mentioned and where.
