Why backlinks are still one of the top 3 Google ranking factors
Link building is one of those SEO topics where everyone knows it's important, but few know how to do it without getting into trouble with Google. Backlinks — links from other websites to yours — remain one of the key signals Google uses to assess authority and relevance. A website with 50 quality backlinks from relevant sources will always outperform a site without backlinks, even if the content is identical. But 'quality' is the key word.
Google has dramatically improved detection of manipulative link schemes over the last 5 years. Buying links on PBN sites (Private Blog Networks), link exchange networks ('I link to you, you link to me'), mass guest posts on sites that exist only to sell links — Google recognises all of this and penalises with manual or algorithmic penalties. A manual action in Google Search Console is an alarm nobody wants to see. Recovery from a penalty can take months.

What actually works: (1) Digital PR — publish something valuable and ask journalists and bloggers to cover it. Research with data, an infographic, an original study of the Serbian market. (2) Guest blogging on relevant sites — but you're writing for a site whose audience is your target audience, not a linkfarm. (3) Broken link building — find broken links on sites in your niche and offer your content as a replacement. (4) HARO or ProfNet — journalists look for sources for stories, you provide a comment and get a link from media.
For the Serbian and regional market, specific sources of quality links: Biznis.rs, Telegraf Biznis, Startit, ITkonekt, regional portals by sector (stomatolog.rs, pravo.rs and similar). Associations and chambers — the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, various professional associations have member directories. Local media — it's much easier to get a link from Blic Biznis or 021.rs than from Forbes. A local link from a local media outlet is worth as much for local SEO as a large national one.
Strategies that work for Serbian and regional websites
Realistic timeframe: first effects of link building on positions are seen in 2 to 4 months. This is because Google has to find the new link, index it, assess the authority of the source and propagate the signal. Not instant. A campaign delivering 3 to 5 quality links per month, consistently over 6 months, can dramatically improve positions for competitive queries.
